People and purpose

For nearly 40 years, we have supported 100,000’s of victims of crime, suicide and traumatic events. Over that time we’ve been steadily growing, with this year’s focus sharper than ever: Putting the wellbeing of our People first and having a clear Purpose.

Our teams have piloted the biggest changes to our practice in years. I am continually inspired and energised by our incredible Support Workers and volunteers, who are clear on what needs to change and are driving it forward with real momentum.

We know the support we provide makes a huge difference. We are already exploring how to ensure all victims of crime can access the

services they need. I hope you feel inspired by the stories and highlights from this year. We have a lot more to come!

More time, more care: How Victim Support’s new model focuses on people

We've been here to support victims for nearly four decades. But a lot has changed from our humble beginnings in Gisborne in 1987. Now, we support 50,000 victims annually across the whole country. This means that the way we work as an organisation needs to evolve to meet the needs of our clients.

The new operating model is our answer. In November 2023, we tested the new way of working that ensures our purpose and practices are clearer, more effective, and better aligned with the needs of the people we serve - and the people doing the mahi.

“I went into the training a little bit apprehensive,” Michelle admits. “But during it, I had this huge moment of clarity. I get this. I understand it, and it’s going to make my role so much easier and better.”

  Operating model launch

Our Wellington, Tasman, and West Coast teams served as “trailblazers,” testing refinements like a practice framework and a six-stage online guide. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting improved focus, client outcomes, and staff wellbeing. Now rolled out nationwide, these changes, along with a refreshed core purpose, ensure we focus our efforts where they matter most.

Key projects

Advocacy

We amplify victims' voices through evidence-based advocacy, demonstrating why victims matter and driving meaningful change. This year, we contributed to significant legislative discussions.

Innovation

In 2024, we began developing a new Case Management System (CMS) to streamline referrals, enhance support planning, and simplify Victim Assistance Scheme applications. This innovation will improve client outcomes and reduce administrative burdens for our team.

Partnership

Since April 2023, One NZ has supported Victim Support with upgraded handsets and secure Mobile Device Management for staff and volunteers. We value their efforts in keeping us connected and look forward to future collaborations.
