NZ Police Statistics

Types of crime referred to VS during June 2002-July 2003:

  • Dishonesty crimes - 49% (theft, burg, robbery)
  • Serious crimes against people - 4% (homicide, assault, sexual assault)
  • Family violence - 12%
  • Emergencies - 6% (suicide, sudden death, transport accidents, fire etc)

No of referrals to VS Services during June 2002-July 2003:

  • Victim Support attended 113,100 incidents
  • Victim Support made contact with 138,058 victims through a total of 161,134 contacts
  • Victim Support spent 79,894 hours in directly supporting victims
  • Our workers travelled 351,229km to provide services to victims

Key Findings

  • There are 1.7 million victimisations per annum (about 30% of the population)
  • 12% of those victimised experienced re-victimisations
  • About 30% of all crime is reported to Police
  • Awareness of Victim Support has risen from 31% to 40% of the populationMaori, Pacific Islanders, students and the elderly are less likely to know about Victim Support
  • People most at risk from victimisation are the young, females and Maori.
  • 12% of victims have experienced four or more victimisations

  • a car is stolen every 10 minutes
  • there are 5 robberies every day
  • there are 8 grievous assaults every day
  • there are 55 sexual attacks every day
  • there are 10 sexual offences every day
  • there are 120 Homicides a year

Prosecutions

  • In 2001 only 66% of prosecutions resulted in conviction
  • Violent offence prosecutions are the least likely (80%) to result in a prosecution

Custodial Sentences

  • Throughout the decade 7-8% of people convicted each year received a custodial sentenceIn 2001 7,864 cases resulted in a custodial sentence – the lowest number since 1996
