“The 72 year old father whose daughter was killed four years ago was referred to us when the Parole hearing was coming up. He didn’t have much family support and still couldn’t talk about what had happened. He’d never talked to his wife about it!
He told me I was the first person he’d been able to talk to. He couldn’t even anticipate what it would mean when the offender was released and we supported him as he thought about and talked about that. We helped him prepare his submission which brought it all back.
We ended up not only supporting him and paying for him to go to Parole, but he also decided he wanted to go to a Restorative Justice conference with the offender in prison. He said “I want him to know the damage he’s done before he gets out.”
