Survey Of Crime Victims Highlights Need For Reporting Crime

12 May 2003

Victim Support Groups right across the country are converging on Rotorua this weekend for the 12th National Victim Support Conference.

An estimated 1.7 million household and individual victimisations, of which only 15% are reported to Police is a sad indictment on our society according to Victim Support Chief Executive Steve Caldwell. The NZ National Survey of Crime Victims Survey indicates one of the main reasons victims give for not reporting a crime is the “lack of seriousness”. "This suggests our citizens accept crime as an everyday part of our lives”, Mr Caldwell said. “When offenders know their criminal activities are unlikely to be reported, they are encouraged to continue their victimising behaviour with twelve per cent of victims having experienced five or more victimisations”, he said.

“Encouraging people to report crime, regardless of how trivial they regard the incident, is going to be a key factor in reducing victimisation”, Mr Caldwell said.
