New Bail Regime Welcomed

5 October 2000

Victim Support’s Chief Executive, Steve Caldwell welcomes the introduction of tough new bail laws.

Requiring alleged ‘hard core’ offenders to prove to the Courts that they are safe to be released on bail is a major step forward in restoring the balance of justice. Victims, whose lives have already been shattered by the actions of such offenders, have the added fear of being revictimised if the offender is released on bail. The new law can give victims some comfort in that they do not have to be concerned about their safety as well as coping with the trauma of the crime. They can also feel safer in exercising their right to express their fears about release on bail of the alleged offender.
I applaud the decision of the Minister of Justice to include ‘career’ burglars in this law, Steve Caldwell said. Our homes are one of those places where we believe we are safe and burglary means more than a loss of our property. We also lose our sense of safety.

Every time a burglary or violent attack is prevented, there are people in our communities who do not have to experience significant trauma and disruption in their lives.
