how you can help

Victim Support has assisted many victims of crime and trauma throughout New Zealand. With your contribution we can help even more.

There are four main ways you can lend a hand:

Making a Financial Donation

Victim Support relies upon voluntary donations from members of the public. We need to raise millions of dollars every year to fund our work in training, advocacy and services. If you’d like to make a donation, there are several ways of going about it:

  • Credit Card
All online donations are transacted on a secure server to ensure the confidentiality of your credit card details.

  • Cheque
Please make your cheque payable to NZCVSG and send to: Fundraising, Victim Support, PO Box 3017, Wellington

  • 0900 VICTIM
Please dial 0900 VICTIM on your telephone and make a $20 donation via your phone bill

Becoming a Volunteer Support Worker

Victim Support has approximately 1500 highly professional and well-trained volunteer support workers delivering our front line service. These workers come from all walks of life and all cultural, political and social backgrounds.

The only qualifications required are a great deal of dedication and commitment, and a caring and compassionate nature. Potential workers are interviewed, screened and complete 50 hours training before beginning their duties.

Our training cover self-awareness, listening and communication skills, coping with grief, death, dying, loss and trauma, and understanding legal, court, hospital and police procedures. Monthly training in further specialist areas is also provided.

In addition to the satisfaction derived from contributing to the wellbeing of your local community, workers find that the skills and qualities that are acquired through the training and work greatly enhance their personal development and significantly contribute to the advancement of their professional careers.

In all, Victim Support workers are adept at working quietly in the background amid the chaos in a person's life - offering options, explaining processes, assisting in practical ways and providing emotional support. Above all, they listen. Their task is to support the client through their crisis and empower them to take control of their lives again and make decisions for themselves.

If you are interested in joining a local Group and becoming a volunteer support worker please contact us.

Provide Corporate Sponsorship

Just like in business offering a quality service costs money. As a voluntary organisation we have to raise our own and that’s why we are inviting companies to come forward and become a friend of Victim Support through our competitive membership programme.

If you would like to receive a corporate membership pack please contact National office.

Leaving a Gift by Legacy or Bequest

When making your will, please think about the needs of victims. Help Victim Support continue to provide our services in your community beyond your lifetime.

If you prefer to make a one off donation (this link will be reinstated shortly) you may of course do so and be rest assured that it will go towards providing the adequate care and support that victims need. On the other hand you might decide to contribute by a legacy or bequest.

When leaving a legacy to Victim Support you have a number of choices:

  • To set up a permanent endowment fund so that the value you have created in your life continues to assist people who are victimised. In this case you may wish to appoint trustees of your choice or you can nominate Victim Support as trustee.
  • To create a named trust in memory of a loved one
  • To leave an asset, such as commercial property or a farm that will go on generating income
  • To specify where in New Zealand you would like the money to be spent
  • To nominate a project of particular significance to you

Your bequest may be for a stated amount of money, it may be a share of the entire estate, or it may be in relation to a specific asset. Your legal advisor can help find the right words to give effect to your wishes.

If you are planning to leave a legacy to Victim Support you are advised to:

  • Get professional advice with drawing up your will
  • Discuss all the terms and conditions with your legal advisor
  • Appoint competent trustees and executors to ensure any special conditions are met
  • Talk to Victim Support about what you would like to do
